I could hear gun fire and explosions. Even shouting. I heard growling and knew it had to be Jack. I focused my thoughts, and I could hear him in my mind as well. He was snarling and growling there too. I couldn't see him, but I could feel what he felt. He was swiping his claws at Thin Man. Something hit him. I felt the sinking feeling as he was free of gravity for a moment then the tension of his muscles and the pressure and vibration of his claws. I knew that feeling, he was digging them into stone stopping himself. His legs were pumping, he was running. He launched himself. Satisfaction. Pleasure with himself. He had swiped a claw across Thin Man's face and proceeded to claw at his midsection. There was a stunned feeling then a painful hit on his back. Something exploded and blew him back. I could hear the explosion almost at the same time.
âJack!â I stopped and started to turn around. Onyeka grabbed me, while Colin's grip around my waist tightened.
âYou will be killed. The only thing allowing you to even move right now is the spirit of Umphakathi.â
âHe needs me!â
âIf he is the prophesied one, then he will not only survive, but he will also be victorious.â She tugged on my arm to keep me moving down the stone hall. âThere is nothing you can do for him.â
âTrust me, lad, your brother can handle the likes of Walter.â We continued on down through the corridor and back outside.
As we stood under the starlit sky, the stars were starting to lose their shine and the sun was coming up. There was a faint glow on the horizon. In minutes it would be orange then the orange will be lit on fire with a bright yellow and then the sky would cool to a blue.
The orange in the sky was starting to grow when Ross, then Nneka emerged from the hole. They both leaned over and pulled Michel out. All three looked a bit battered and beaten, covered in scrapes, bruises and dirt. I limped over to them. âJack?â
âJack is fine,â Michel said, âand so am I, thanks for asking.â
It took effort but I put my hand on his shoulder. âI never doubted you would be.â My knees gave out and I was going down when Michel caught me.
âAz!â
âYour adversary has poisoned him.â Onyeka told him. Ross was already opening his first aid kit. âThere is nothing your medicine can do for him. This is a magic unlike any I have ever seen.â
âAz!â Michel was worried. âWhat happened?â
âThin Man threw a vial.â I couldn't tell if I was talking or whispering. âHe... he... shot it.â
âAnd it sprayed you.â Michel laid me on the ground, held his hand over me and chanted. I saw a light come from his palm as he looked me over. âOh, my blessed lord. Your skin is turning white as snow.â
âDo you know what it is?â Nneka asked.
âNo, but I have an idea.
